Cosmas (Cosmo) Bennet
(Lowland District) The climate being unsuitable, he left, unordained, 5th June 1822, and went to Aquhorties; probably so ill that still unordained when died in Aquhorties, 1825. (MT)
Cosmo Bennet was born about July 1801 in the Enzie district of Banffshire, son of James Bennett and Janet Reid. He was the brother of James Gordon Bennett, founder of the New York Herald, and the uncle of James Gordon Bennett Junior, who founded what is now the International Herald Tribune. James Gordon Junior spent his time between New York and France, and had a scandalous lifestyle. He was the source of the British-English exclamation of surprise, "Gordon Bennett!"
Cosmo died on 10th May 1825 in Aquhorties.
